CRAFTING A PROJECT PLAN

Sep 30, 2024

I have written before about my practice of drafting a project plan for all my goals and then promptly trashing the project plan once it’s complete. What I haven’t told you is why I do that.

The world today seems to be moving faster than ever. New technologies abound. New ways of making money seem to be coming into existence. New ideas seem to be shared every day.

And I want to take advantage of all this newness coming into the world.

When I create a project plan, it’s a listing of my best ideas today for how to get from where I am to where I want to go. It’s out of date the moment I create it, as there are always new ideas coming into existence. There are always better paths opening up for me. There are always shortcuts coming forward for me.

If I were rigid about my project plan, I wouldn’t see that often there is an easier way to get where I want to go than the plan my mind created. If I were a person who thought that discipline and adherence were the way to live, then I’d get caught up in a project plan that could be improving if I allowed it. If I were someone who thought making myself do things the hard way was laudable, then I might get stuck in a project plan that could be so much easier. If only I allowed.

That’s how I charge toward my goals now. By allowing. I allow myself to take the easy route. I allow myself to be helped and guided. I allow myself to find a path that serves up a delightful journey as I make my way toward my goals.

Project plans are the work of a limited mind. If you put them away, then you symbolically allow for life to serve you something better than what your mind created. In fact, you create room for life to do its best work, showing you how to live.

Project plans are still useful. They help me envision a path to my goals. They help me see that my goals are achievable. They help me quiet my mind so that I can step into today and do the work that is in front of me. With joy.

In case you didn’t know, goals that your cruise toward in joy are goals that are worth pursuing. Goals that make you feel more alive are goals to put on your list. Goals that stretch you to do more allowing and less controlling are goals that will change your life.

Here is why. What you resist persists. What you allow is always better than you could have plotted with your limited mind.

Here’s what I mean by allowance. I don’t reschedule my work on all my writing projects. Instead, I get up each day and ask myself, What would be fun for me to? Whatever comes to mind, I do that. Even if another project is waiting on me. Even if other people are waiting on me. Even if there is no outlet for my current writing project that I can see.

That’s how this website started. Me with some ideas and not knowing what to do with them. So I started a newsletter. Then a blog. Then some courses. And now I am on the cusp of publishing my first book. No elaborate business plan. No regimented hours writing. Just me having fun and working on whatever seemed good to me each day.

You have the capacity to plot your life toward your goals. You also have the power to allow the path to be shown to you. I highly recommend the latter approach as it leads to far more satisfying days. I set the goals and I let spirit show me the way.
